The stars of Lancashire tourism and hospitality shone brightly last night (Tuesday 7 February 2023) at the Lancashire Tourism Awards, held at the new Blackpool Conference and Exhibition Centre, supported by Headline Sponsor University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and Destination Sponsor Visit Blackpool.

Lancashire comedian Steve Royle was Guest Presenter and kept the audience entertained throughout, with the unique style and brilliant humour that saw him reach the finals of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent. Having recently celebrated his 1000th appearance in panto, the 400-strong audience of tourism professionals, sponsors and supporters were guided masterfully and joyfully through 24 awards – Oh yes they were!

This year saw the addition of a brand new award, in association with Headline Sponsor UCLan, the award for Hospitality and Tourism Student of the Year. The winner of the award was Charlie Nicholls, a C&G L3 Diploma in Professional Cookery student at Blackpool and the Fylde College. There was strong competition for the award’s first year and the judges agreed that David Wetherill, a student on the Chef Diploma course at Runshaw College should also be commended, and he was presented with a special certificate on the night. Much to their delight, the students collected their accolades from celebrated Lancashire Chef and Taste Lancashire Ambassador, Paul Heathcote MBE.

This year’s Special Recognition Award, selected by the judges across all the finalists, was awarded to Crow Wood Hotel & Spa Resort by Marketing Lancashire’s Chair of the Board, Andrea Challis.

Earlier in the evening Andrea Challis proudly addressed the audience, for the first time as Chair of the Board of Marketing Lancashire saying “I am delighted to be here to celebrate with you all and to help the Marketing Lancashire team champion the very best of the county’s tourism and hospitality businesses. I am honestly in awe of the strength and diversity of our wonderful sector here in Lancashire.

“I have learnt through my involvement with Marketing Lancashire, and the other organisations and initiatives that I am a part of, that we have our own businesses, our own challenges and our own opportunities for growth but when we work together, we can, and we do, achieve so much more.”

Rachel McQueen, Chief Executive of Marketing Lancashire followed Andrea’s speech with her review of the last year, a year that saw Lancashire ‘fighting back’ from the impact of Covid on the tourism and hospitality sector “Success in 2022 was hard fought, hard won, against, quite literally, all the odds. But successes there were, and significant ones too.”

On the finalists this year she said “What came through loud and clear from the judges and our mystery shoppers was the tremendous hard work, determination, entrepreneurship and vision demonstrated by our tourism businesses.

“There is absolutely no shortage of pride, passion and ambition in this room, and myself and the Marketing Lancashire team look forward to working with you to support the county’s tourism and hospitality sector to thrive.”

She also thanked the many supporters and sponsors of the awards including:  B&D Print Services, Blackpool and the Fylde College, Creative Council, Creative Venue Stylist, Dewlay Cheesemakers, DFC, Harrison Drury Solicitors, Heckford, Insight 6, Lancashire Business View, Lancashire Life, Lancashire Post, Lancashire Telegraph, Lancaster University Management School, Links Signs and Graphics, Northern Print Distribution, the Pentland Centre for Sustainability in Business and Total Foodservice.
