UCLan and Marketing Lancashire launches Student, Hospitality and Tourism award

Today (Wednesday 16th November 2022), a partnership between Marketing Lancashire, the county’s official tourist board and destination management organisation, and the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) have announced a new award seeking a hospitality, events and tourism Student of the Year.

The Hospitality, Events and Tourism Student of the Year award will form part of the line up at the Lancashire Tourism Awards 2022, where the winner will join around 65 leisure and tourism businesses already shortlisted as finalists across 21 categories at a ceremony to be held at the Blackpool Conference and Exhibition Centre on Tuesday 7th February 2023.

The winner and a guest will be invited to join around 400 representatives from across Lancashire’s leisure and hospitality industry as well as guests and stakeholders, to receive their award.

Rachel McQueen, Chief Executive of Marketing Lancashire commenting on this year’s awards, said: ‘We are delighted to offer this new award in partnership with our Headline Sponsor UCLan to recognise an individual studying a hospitality or tourism related course who demonstrates exceptional commitment to a career in hospitality or tourism.  We are looking for someone who is excelling in their studies and deserves to be applauded for their work and determination.

At a time when, now more than ever, visitor economy businesses are facing challenges in recruitment and retaining career skills, it is fundamental that we offer our support and encouragement to those individuals who are setting out on their journey in the industry.’

Commenting on the new award, Louise McArdle, Head of School of Management at UCLan said: ‘We are excited to launch this new award alongside Marketing Lancashire, giving college students the opportunity to share their drive and enthusiasm for their course. We know that the visitor economy is facing really challenges recruiting and retaining people so we are delighted to be able to assist the sector in addressing these issues. We hope that this award will offer a life changing opportunity to students, while showcasing the great talent we have in the region’.

The Award is open to any student on a hospitality, tourism, events or catering related course, at all levels of study within an FE College setting and must be nominated by a tutor, placement manager or by a local awards competition judge using the nomination form available at https://www.lancashiretourismawards.com/the-awards/enter/hospitality-student-award-2022 . The closing date for nominations is Friday 9th December 2022.

Shortlisted finalists will be invited to present to a panel of academics and industry experts at UCLan in January and the winner will be invited along with a guest to join the awards ceremony on February 7th 2023 at The Blackpool Conference and Exhibition Cetre.
